The Width of the World

Every article in this collection walks some corner of the collaboration graph; this one measures the whole thing. The question is the oldest parlor game in network science — how many handshakes separate any two musicians on Earth? — and the answer has always been folklore, like everything else we audit. So the machine measured it — twice. First an afternoon expedition: three hundred exact breadth-first sweeps across the full graph of who-played-on-a-recording-with-whom. Then, a month later, the census: a sweep from every musician on the mainland, all 485,657,850,681 pairs measured, no sampling anywhere, every distance exact. The expedition's story is told below as it happened; the census's corrections are in The recount, at the end, and they are few.

First, the shape of the world. One artist in this graph touches enough others to matter: the connected mainland — the giant component — holds 985,554 musicians, reachable from anyone else on it. But that mainland is only 44.8 percent of all artists with collaboration edges: the majority of connected musicians live on islands — the local scene, the church choir, the band that never shared a member with anyone — whose only bridge to the mainland runs through compilation albums, which we excluded as the wormholes they are (the "Various Artists" node would put everyone four handshakes from everyone, and it is not a person). The world is smaller than you think and less connected than you think, at the same time.

Music really is six degrees. The mean separation between two musicians on the mainland is 6.2650 — the expedition's poll read 6.2933, and the census below corrected the second decimal — the most common distance is exactly six (141.4 billion pairs); ninety-seven percent of all pairs sit within nine handshakes. The parlor game, for once, had the right number all along — the allusion is Milgram's, and for this population it is not a metaphor but a measurement.

The width. The farthest-apart pair the sweeps could witness stands at 26 handshakes — first certified as a 26-to-28 bracket, since closed by the census: the diameter is exactly 26, and the bracket closed at the bottom, where the expedition's witnessed pair already stood. The pair: Vicente Mauri Soler, a voice from the 1922 Madrid revista Arco iris — the very same zarzuela shoreline the Quincy Jones expedition once reached from the opposite direction, which is what you'd hope: the far shore of the world does not depend on where you sail from — and, at the other end, Steve Hillier, a working British writer of the streaming era. Twenty-six handshakes, every one of them a real recording session.

And the road between them is the best single walk in this collection. It leaves 1920s Madrid through Eugenia Zúffoli and the chotis-and-foxtrot theater of Luis Bori and Celia Gámez; crosses into opera through composer Francisco Alonso and a Traviata; sails the Atlantic inside the chorus of Mexico's Palacio de Bellas Artes and the contralto Oralia Dominguez; reaches **Ferenc Fricsay** — hold that name — and then performs the single most improbable handshake in the file: from Fricsay's Dvořák to Eminem, joined by a bootleg mashup of the Marshall Mathers LP and the New World Symphony that somebody, somewhere, credited to both. From Eminem to Nas is one obvious step; after Nas the path dives off fame's map entirely and spends eleven handshakes among bedroom producers and a live tape from an open-mic night at Thistle Hall, Wellington, 2023 before reaching Hillier. The two halves of recorded music — the zarzuela world and the SoundCloud world — are sewn together at one seam, and the thread is a mashup of questionable legality. The court declines to draw a moral. The court merely notes that civilization's connective tissue has always looked like this on close inspection.

The center. The sweeps' midpoint test found that every musician on the mainland is within 14 handshakes of one man, and the man is not Quincy Jones, not Springsteen (the mainland's biggest hub and our sweep's starting gate), but **Ferenc Fricsay** — Hungarian conductor, Berlin's first great postwar record-maker, one half of a 69-year producer marriage, dead in 1963 at age 48. He sits at position 13 of the 26-step chain — the exact middle — because a conductor of his era touches both shores at once: backwards into every opera chorus and session orchestra of the shellac age, forwards, via the vault and one disrespectful mashup, into everything since. The center of the recorded universe is a man who never heard stereo become standard. The ledger keeps the seat warm.

The recount. The expedition ran three hundred sweeps in an afternoon on the tiny computer. A month later a bigger machine spent one night running all of them — one exact breadth-first sweep from every one of the 985,554 mainland musicians, every one of the 485,657,850,681 pairs measured, no sampling anywhere. The verdict on the expedition: the mean moved from 6.2933 to 6.2650, a correction of one-fortieth of a handshake. The diameter bracket closed on its bottom edge; the far pair did not move; Fricsay's eccentricity is exactly 14 — the radius of the world, a distinction the census shows he shares with 2,270 other musicians, none of whom were found first. The census cost three thousand times the compute and confirmed the afternoon. The court notes, for the record, that polling works; the court ran the census anyway, because the whole point of this establishment is that nobody should have to take its word for anything.


Method: collaboration = co-credit on a recording (performer ∪ credit edges); distances counted in artist-to-artist steps. Excluded: the Various Artists collective node and bracketed special-purpose artists (546 nodes). Giant component from the highest-degree artist (Bruce Springsteen). Mean/histogram: 300 uniformly sampled sources × exact BFS = 295,665,900 source-pair distances (sampled by source, exact per source). Diameter: best witnessed eccentricity 26 (stable across six alternating sweeps); upper bound 28 = twice the eccentricity of the witness path's midpoint (Fricsay); the true value is 26, 27, or 28 — settled by the census: it is 26. All 27 chain ids verified against the serving graph. Expedition runtime: 2h32m, one container, [a tiny computer kept warm](/6d33/busiest-day). Census (recount): exact BFS from all 985,554 mainland artists, distance-preserving reduction first (leaf recordings dropped; duplicate sessions merged only on verified identical credit lists), 4.4 h across 60 threads.
