The Three-Minute Song, Measured

Why are songs about three minutes long? Because in 1900 a ten-inch shellac disc at 78 rpm held about three minutes, and by the time the constraint died, the constraint had become the culture. That is the folk history. Here is what 32.9 million dated, timed recordings actually say:

Five regimes, each one a piece of hardware:

One glitch on the chart is history, not error: the 1942 band spikes upward and 1943's count collapses — that is the American Federation of Musicians' recording ban (August 1942–1944), when commercial recording in the US largely stopped and the odd V-Disc and transcription disc dominated the year.

Three hundred years of tape

Sum every timed recording in the database and you get 9.14 billion seconds: 289 years and 8 months of continuous audio — about 323 years if the untimed recordings run to the same average. To hear all of it once, no sleeping, no bathroom breaks, you would have needed to press play around 1704, when Johann Sebastian Bach was nineteen — and you would still be a century short, because the database adds roughly a decade of listening time every month.

The clock has sequels

The measurements above opened a case file that keeps growing. The clock sorted by genre turns out to be a ruler with a fossil record — doo-wop still keeps 45-rpm time, techno keeps 12-inch time. The clock sorted by track position shows the epic closing track is younger than its reputation, a child of the CD rather than the LP. And the seconds-hand of the database itself prefers round numbers, because half the lengths on file were typed by people, and people like :00. The three-minute song was hardware once. It has been culture, economics, and paperwork ever since — one story per instrument that measured it.

Method: 32.9M recordings with a length between 10 seconds and one hour and a date between 1927 and 2025 (years with under 200 timed recordings are omitted). Quartiles per dated year; recording dates in MusicBrainz lean on first-release dating. Total-duration figures use all 35.5M timed recordings. Computed August 2026 against the 2026-07-25 build.
