The 1,024-Character Song Title

Somewhere in the database schema of MusicBrainz there is a limit, and the world has found it. Scan all 39.6 million recording titles for the longest, and the result is a cliff face: twenty-four titles measure exactly 1,024 characters — a kilobyte of title, chopped mid-sentence by the field boundary, the typographic equivalent of a bug hitting a windshield at full speed.

A taxonomy emerges from the wreckage. The all-time champion, at 1,059 characters (predating the wall, apparently), is the manifesto: a noise artist's step-by-step instructional rant teaching the listener how to find album downloads via Discogs, formatted in title case like a Fall Out Boy song that went to trade school. Behind it, the ingredient list — a track titled with the complete cosmetic ingredients of some unnamed face cream, glycerin and perfluoroisobutyl ether marching toward the 1,024 barrier like lemmings.

More poignant is the session transcript: bootleg tape reels whose "titles" are complete narrations of what happens on the tape — every false start, every mumble, take after take — credited to MusicBrainz's placeholder artist [dialogue] and cataloguing chaos with the solemnity of a court reporter. This is the database's outsider art: someone typed a kilobyte of tape archaeology into a title field because there was nowhere else for the truth to go.

The genre skews, unsurprisingly, toward harshnoise and vaporwave — scenes where the track can be 582 hours long and the title is part of the joke — but the purest entry is the honest one: "the title of this song doesn't need to be this long but it is because i think it's kind of funny." Twenty-four titles hit a wall built by a database administrator, and every one of them would have kept going.
