Thinking of the ultimate minimalist band name? Too late. Every letter of the alphabet and every digit is already taken — most of them many times over. MusicBrainz holds 807 single-character artist names across the world's scripts, including ☂ (an umbrella), 腰 (a waist), and one act named ๛, the Thai end-of-document mark. Here is the ASCII corner of that periodic table:

The keyboard's most contested key is Q: 56 different artists are named exactly that, presumably all drawn by the same troika of scarcity, mystery, and Bond. K has 48 claimants, Z has 36; the rarest letters to want are the vowels' poor cousins — only 8 acts have dared to be I. Among digits, 5 and 6 are the loneliest numbers: exactly one artist each. (One number is missing from the grid's story entirely, and we've written about 28 before.)

The biggest careers behind single letters, by recorded catalog:

• X — the Los Angeles punk band, founded 1977, 490 recording credits: the most productive one-character act in history, sharing its name with 26 others including the Australian X (also punk, also 1977, to everyone's eternal confusion).
• M — Robin Scott's new-wave project, 1978, whose "Pop Muzik" made a single letter a #1 hit.
• D and J — both from Japan, where a one-letter stage name is an institution (J of Luna Sea; D the visual-kei band), and both out-recording nearly every western letter.
• A — the British rock band whose name is a search-engine hostage situation, chosen in the mid-nineties, moments before anyone understood what that would mean.

The single-character name is the typographic equivalent of the gratuitous umlaut — a bet that less name means more identity. The bet mostly fails (median one-letter act: a handful of recordings), but when it lands, it lands: a letter is the only name a fan can spray-paint in one stroke.
