The Rooms

Some studios show up on thousands of records. That makes them busy, not necessarily between. This page asks a different question: through which rooms do the shortest chains of "played on a session with" actually run?

Trace the shortest path from any musician to any other — she played on a session with him, who played on a session at… — and count, for every studio and venue, how many of those chains are forced through sessions recorded there. A house studio whose regulars all know each other carries almost nothing, no matter how many records it made. A room where different worlds booked time — jazz dates on Tuesday, string sections on Wednesday — becomes a door whole scenes walked through to reach each other.

Computed exactly (no sampling) over every performer-credited recording and its recording location in MusicBrainz, refreshed with each data build. Paths are capped at a few session-hops (the table notes the current bound) — a chain of introductions spanning many sessions isn't how anyone gets a gig.

A place only appears here when MusicBrainz records both who performed on a recording and where it was recorded — coverage is best for the studio era and for scenes with diligent editors. The bar is a log scale, like the ribbon widths in the family trees.
