Salieri's Revenge

Amadeus made Antonio Salieri the patron saint of mediocrity: the court composer doomed to recognize genius without possessing it. The database holds a different ledger. Follow every recorded teacher–student link forward — your students, their students, theirs — and Salieri's classroom compounds into 6,889 musical descendants across eleven generations, running from imperial Vienna into the present day. Among the fifteen students he taught directly: Franz Schubert, Franz Liszt, and Johann Nepomuk Hummel. Every pianist those men trained, and every pianist those pianists trained, is a leaf on Salieri's tree. Mediocrity does not echo for two hundred years.

The shapes are six theories of influence. Nadia Boulanger — the century's most famous teacher — has the biggest single classroom in the corpus, 214 direct students, but her line collapses within five generations: she taught composers, not teachers, and a supernova doesn't found a lineage. J.S. Bach is her inverse — thirteen students, then a twelve-generation crescendo that doesn't peak until the ninth generation (1,756 descendants, most of them alive in the twentieth century). Beethoven taught five people and ended up with 4,276 descendants, because one of the five was Carl Czerny. One student was enough. Czerny in turn taught eleven — among them Liszt and Theodor Leschetizky, the two rivers all modern piano pedagogy drains into — and 4,240 followed.

The biggest classroom belongs to nobody famous

The largest dynasty in the entire database — 7,262 descendants — belongs to Johann Georg Albrechtsberger, Viennese organist and counterpoint theorist, a name that survives today mostly as a footnote in other men's biographies. His student list reads like the footnote got its revenge: Beethoven, Antoine Reicha, Hummel, Ignaz Moscheles, Ferdinand Ries, and Mozart's own son Franz Xaver Wolfgang Mozart. While Salieri handled the emperor's operas, Albrechtsberger taught the actual class.

An irony inside the irony: Salieri's 6,889 do not include Beethoven. MusicBrainz records Beethoven's teachers as Neefe, Schenk, Haydn, and Albrechtsberger — the famous Salieri lessons never made it into the data. The movie's rivalry is missing its edge; the counterpoint teacher's isn't.

One structural confession: this tree is not a tree. Students had many teachers, so the lineages braid — most of Czerny's descendants are also Beethoven's, and Albrechtsberger's nine-generation depth is shallower than Beethoven's ten because the graph reaches the same modern pianists by shorter parallel paths. Dynasty sizes overlap; they cannot be summed.

The deep roots are Neapolitan

Sort by depth instead of size and the top of the table leaves Vienna entirely: Francesco Provenzale, founder of the Neapolitan school, reaches sixteen generations — the longest teaching lineage in the database — and Gaetano Greco, Giovanni Rovetta, Giovanni Legrenzi, and Antonio Lotti all carry ~6,900 descendants apiece out of the 17th century. The conservatories of Naples and the choir lofts of Venice are where the whole braid anchors; Vienna was the middle of the river, not the source.

Who the ledger forgets

The counts only know what conservatory culture wrote down. Leopold Auer's 532 descendants are practically the modern violin, and Clara Schumann's line runs seven quiet generations. But Ravi Shankar — whose guru–shishya lineage is among the oldest continuous teaching traditions on Earth — shows two recorded students. The parampara lives in dedication and memory, not in relational databases; entire teaching civilizations sit outside this ledger. Salieri's revenge is real, but it is the revenge of a man whose world kept meticulous records.

Method: transitive closure over the 29,144 teacher-of relationships, breadth-first from each teacher; a "generation" is the shortest teaching path from the root. Dynasty membership overlaps heavily between roots. Teacher data in MusicBrainz is sparse and skews classical and European — counts are floors, not censuses.
