The Romance Graph

Among its soberer facts, MusicBrainz records marriages and relationships between artists: 9,713 married-to edges and 1,774 involved-with edges, covering 21,258 people. Love, being a relation, makes a graph. Almost all of it shatters into couples — 9,890 separate components, most of size two, which is how romance is supposed to work.

But not all of it.

The giant is bilingual

The largest connected component holds 193 people, and its heart is French: the Vadim–Bardot–Gainsbourg axis of 1960s cinema and chanson, where singers married actors who dated directors who married other singers. What makes it a giant is the bridge out: the Birkin family. From Jane Birkin and Gainsbourg the component reaches London and Los Angeles — through the Jamiroquai and All Saints orbit, on to John Frusciante, and, fourteen recorded partners deep, to Prince, the best-connected node in the entire romance graph. One unbroken chain of documented affection runs from Brigitte Bardot to Prince.

The runner-up component (46 people) is the American classic-rock–Hollywood web: Cher to Gregg Allman to Gene Simmons territory, with Jack Nicholson — ten partners recorded in a music database without singing a note — as its most durable vertex. Then come the island chains: Björk's trip-hop archipelago, the Laurel Canyon polygon around Joni Mitchell (Nash, Taylor, Cohen — the Ladies of the Canyon liner notes as an adjacency list), Elvis's Memphis web, and a strictly modern one where Taylor Swift and Katy Perry share a component because pop stars now date each other's exes on a schedule.

The Rumours anomaly

And Fleetwood Mac — the band whose internal romances produced the best-selling breakup album ever made? The database cuts them in half. Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham anchor an eleven-person component that includes both Eagles she dated and, four handshakes out, Ellen DeGeneres. Meanwhile Christine and John McVie sit in their own tidy three-person island. No edge connects the halves: the affairs that made Rumours famous were never entered as relationships. The most documented heartbreak in rock history is, as far as the paperwork is concerned, hearsay.

Elsewhere in the data, Pamela Des Barres — the great memoirist of groupie life — carries thirteen edges, which any of her readers could have predicted, and the component around Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love reaches, via a chain of actors, all the way to Meg Ryan.
