Formerly Known As, Formerly Known As

A band name feels permanent from outside. From inside it is a hermit-crab shell. MusicBrainz records 1,937 "renamed into" edges — official molts, where one act became another — and because a rename can be renamed, they chain. Eighty-five chains run three names or longer:

The champion story is Swedish: the biggest rock band Sweden produced in the nineties spent its larval stages as Jones & Giftet ("Jones & the Poison") and then Havsänglar ("Sea Angels") before molting into Kent in 1993 and selling out arenas for twenty-five years. Somewhere in Eskilstuna there is a poster for a Havsänglar gig that is now a lottery ticket.

The five-name chains are genre studies in themselves. Release → Complete → Driven → Veiled → [Blood Has Been Shed](/artist/1798585) is a Connecticut metalcore band cycling through one-word intensities like a thesaurus on a treadmill until arriving, exhausted, at a full sentence. (Their drummer later joined Killswitch Engage; the name finally stuck when it stopped auditioning.) The German chain Nuttenmörrda → NTM → Rudi Revolutioner → Obszön → Rudi91 reads like a punk biography compressed to five words — provocation, initials, revolution, provocation again, and finally just Rudi with his birth year, which is where all punks end up.

And Wess and the Airedales document the opposite phenomenon: a band as a vehicle, renamed for whoever fronted it — Doug Fowlkes' Airdales, then Rocky Roberts' Airedales, then Wess's — the same dog with three different owners, wandering from American soul to Italian television.

The molt is almost always upward in seriousness or downward in shame; nobody renames sideways. And the direction of history is visible in the endpoints: chains that end before 2000 end in names; chains that end after 2010 end in brandable, searchable, umlaut-free strings. The hermit crab now picks its shells for SEO.

Method: MusicBrainz "renamed into" artist relationships (1,937 edges), chained head-to-tail; 85 chains of length ≥3 exist, eight shown. Each name is a separate artist entry — click through and the discographies pick up where the previous shell left off. Computed August 2026 against the 2026-07-25 build.
