Ninety-Eight Masks

The release curves said vaporwave never died. This is about who's making it — or rather, about how thoroughly the genre has arranged for that question not to have an answer. Take the 5,519 artists credited on vaporwave-family releases and measure their documentation against other scenes:

The pattern is a signature. On every documentation axis, vaporwave sits at the bottom: 2.6% of its artists reach Wikidata (indie rock: 61.2%), 7% have so much as a begin date, less than half have a country. But on the identity axis, the ranking flips: 25.8% of vaporwave-family artists carry performs-as links — six to ten times the rate of black metal or indie rock. This is not a scene that failed to be documented. It is a scene where identity itself is the artwork: personhood hidden, linkage flaunted. Masks, but masks that credit their wearers.

The webs

Follow those identity links within the cohort and they weave into constellations. The largest belongs to a single artist wearing ninety-eight names, among them Luxury Simulator, Unaired Sitcom, SimTycoon℠, Publix Government Jr., and — fully committed to the genre's subject matter — Gulf View Square Mall, which is a real, dying shopping center in Port Richey, Florida. An artist who performs as the mall itself. Hover the constellation:

The runners-up are their own gallery. One 69-name web contains artists named 🐰, ☃, ☎️, and a string of Sumerian cuneiform. A 66-name web includes SULP HSOTNICAM — Macintosh Plus, mirrored — an entire parody identity-universe orbiting someone else's mask. Another web runs through Default Artist, DJ Nonstick Cookware, and NERV Elevator. And one 39-name constellation belongs to Legowelt's Dutch analog empire, which drifted into the cohort through hardvapour — proof the mask tradition predates the genre that perfected it.

The founder has eighteen; her imitators have more

Ramona Andra Xavier — the artist who effectively built this genre — carries eighteen recorded identities: Vektroid, Macintosh Plus, PrismCorp Virtual Enterprises, Laserdisc Visions, New Dreams Ltd., 情報デスクVIRTUAL, and a dozen more. Eighteen — and at least twelve identity-webs in her own genre are now bigger than hers. The students out-masked the master.

And the masks themselves get bootlegged. The database contains three artists named Macintosh Plus: Xavier's, plus one with 23 recordings whose releases include FLORAL SHOPPE 5 and florale shoppe 4, plus a third that is somebody else's registered alias entirely. A genre built on sampling dead commercial music has ended up sampling its own identities — the most vaporwave fact this database contains.

Method: cohort = 5,519 artists credited on release groups tagged into the vaporwave family; comparison cohorts by artist-level genre tag. Identity webs = connected components over performs-as links touching the cohort; alias counts are floors (MusicBrainz splits identities unevenly, and person-typing inside this scene is itself unreliable — several "persons" above are plainly masks). Genre is sourced data. Computed August 2026 against the 2026-07-25 MusicBrainz build.
