Old Enough to Start a Band

Take every band in the database with a founding date, find the members whose join date matches the founding, check their birth years, and you get 35,747 answers to a simple question: how old are people when they start a band?

The headline answer has not moved in ninety years. The median founding member of a 1960s band was 21. Of a 1990s band: 22. Of a 2020s band: 22. Through wars, formats, genres, and the collapse of the entire recorded-music economy, starting a band has remained something people do at twenty-two.

The interesting motion is all in the tail. In the 1960s — the youthquake, literally the youngest decade to found a band in the whole record — only 4.5% of founding members were over 35, and the middle half of all founders was squeezed into ages 19–24: a demographic monoculture. Since then the over-35 share has climbed every single decade, to 17.6% in the 2020s. One founding member in six is now old enough to have teenage children. The garage has become a two-generation space: the median founder is still 22, but standing next to them is, increasingly often, someone's dad.

Two honest wrinkles. The 1930s–40s medians of 25 reflect a different institution — you didn't start a swing orchestra at 19; you apprenticed in someone else's first. And the modern rise has a documentation component: a database written mostly in the present is better at recording the 45-year-old's new project than 1965 was — the sixties' 4.5% is the cleanest number here precisely because that era's bands are so exhaustively documented. But a fourfold swing is too large to be bookkeeping alone, and it agrees with everything else visible in the modern catalog: careers no longer end at 30, and neither do beginnings.

The deeper invariant is worth sitting with. Nearly a century of data, every possible upheaval in how music is made, sold, and heard — and the age at which people say let's start a band barely moves. Some constants live in the technology. This one appears to live in people.

Method: groups with a dated founding year; founding members are those whose membership begin year is within one year of the group's; ages from birth years, kept in the plausible 12–75 range; 35,747 founding memberships across 90 years.
