Forty Minutes, Give or Take

The album has changed its body three times — a plastic disc with a physical ceiling, a laser disc with room to spare, and no disc at all — and the ledger has measured every body. Median runtime of a studio album, by half-decade, 1.3 million tracklists:

Read it as a breath. The vinyl decades hold the album at 33 to 38 minutes — not by taste but by physics, the LP side being the same kind of ceiling the shellac disc was for the song. The compact disc removes the ceiling in the mid-eighties, and the album inhales: 42.6, 49.1, and at the 1995–99 peak 51.1 minutes, the biggest container-driven swell in the format's history. Then the remarkable part, because nothing replaced the CD's limit — no disc, no groove, no ceiling at all — and yet from 2000 onward the album exhales for twenty-five consecutive years: 50.2, 48.2, 45.6, 42.9, 40.5, and 39.7 minutes in the current half-decade, two minutes from its 1980 vinyl figure. Unlimited space, and the album walked back to the size of the old room.

The witness that explains it is the track count, which across the entire seventy years barely moves: ten to twelve tracks, always. The CD inhale was never more songs — it was the same ten songs, longer, padded further by the skit industry and the swelling closer. And the streaming exhale is those same forces in reverse, shorter songs in the same ten slots. The album, it turns out, was never really a length. It is a count — about ten statements per sitting — and forty minutes is simply what ten statements cost at the going rate per song. The containers came and went. The sitting stayed human-sized. Whatever the format ceiling has been — shellac, groove, laser, none — the actual container was always the listener's evening, and that one has never been reissued in an extended edition.

Method: studio albums (MB primary type Album), earliest dated release per group, 5–40 tracks with stated lengths summing over 10 minutes: 1.30M albums, 1950–2026, medians per half-decade (the sparse 1950–54 bin, 25.3 min over 464 albums, is omitted from the chart).
