Motown Was a Family. Literally.

"The Motown family" is usually a metaphor about company culture. Take the metaphor out of it. Start at Berry Gordy and follow only the kinship edges in MusicBrainz — sibling, parent, marriage, partner — for three steps. You reach fifty musicians, and they include a startling share of the label's roster and half of pop history since:

Walk the edges. Berry's sister Anna Gordy married [Marvin Gaye](/artist/2869192) — their divorce settlement became the album Here, My Dear, possibly the only alimony payment with liner notes. Sister Gwen married Harvey Fuqua, the Moonglows founder who brought Marvin to Detroit in the first place and decades later produced Sylvester's disco records — the family tree's quiet link to San Francisco. Berry and Diana Ross had a daughter, Rhonda Ross Kendrick — a fact Motown kept quiet for seventeen years. Berry's son Kennedy records as Rockwell — he begged the A&R department not to tell his father, then got Michael Jackson to sing the hook on "Somebody's Watching Me" anyway. Another son's son is Redfoo of LMFAO, which makes "Party Rock Anthem" a third-generation Motown record, spiritually speaking.

And the right side of the graph is the merger: Jermaine Jackson married Hazel Gordy, Berry's daughter — which is why, when the Jacksons left Motown for CBS in 1975, Jermaine alone stayed. One marriage edge, and through it the entire Jackson dynasty — Michael, Janet, all nine siblings and the next generation — sits three kinship steps from Berry Gordy's chair.

Fifty people, four kinds of edge, no session credits required. Other labels had rosters; Motown had a genealogy. The graph doesn't distinguish between the business and the family because, for one company on West Grand Boulevard, there was never a difference to record.
